1.Features of the slopes and courses
Charmant Hiuchi Ski Resort in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, is about a 30-minute drive from the Hokuriku Expressway’s Oku Interchange. Located on a north-facing slope overlooking the Sea of Japan, it is also known as a heavy snowfall ski resort. 65% of its skiable area is ungroomed, and during peak season, its superb powder snow attracts many skiers.
This resort features one of Japan’s few courses that fully utilizes natural terrain, offering a richly undulating layout (20% beginner, 45% intermediate, 35% advanced). Its appeal lies in skiing while overlooking the Sea of Japan. With intermediate and advanced courses comprising 80% of the total, it boasts a highly technical configuration, making it a challenging and rewarding destination for skiers and snowboarders seeking to hone their skills.
From the official website of Charman Hiuchi Ski Resort
For skiers and snowboarders who want to enjoy the finest powder snow to their heart’s content, we recommend the HIYAMA Course. As one of Japan’s longest non-stop powder areas, its varied slopes and technical features like standing trees offer unparalleled satisfaction when conquered. Additionally, the Prince Course boasts some of Japan’s steepest powder slopes and, combined with the HIYAMA Course, is highly recommended for advanced riders.

Beginners should head to the Volley Course, Charman’s longest run. With a glide distance of 1,623 meters and an average slope of 8 degrees, it’s a course beginners can enjoy all the way from the summit. For those who want to improve further or have experience but feel uneasy after a long break, the Evian Course is recommended. This medium-slope course features a wide, well-groomed surface, making it ideal for stepping up your skills or getting back into the swing of things.
At the ski resort, using the high-speed lift that takes you to the summit provides access to all courses. During the peak season in January and February, you can enjoy the pristine powder of the vast ungroomed areas with just one lift ride. From March to May, you can glide leisurely while gazing out at the Sea of Japan, or play on the spring terrain’s bumps and dips like a natural park. Experience the diverse, character-filled courses that change with the snow conditions throughout the seasons.

Itoigawa City boasts abundant mountain produce and, facing the Sea of Japan, also offers a wealth of seafood. Restaurant “Salut” recommends the “Charmant Bowl” (¥1000, tax included), named after the ski slope. Created as an original ski resort menu item, this bibimbap-style bowl features locally grown Koshihikari rice topped with minced meat, white scallions, a warm egg, and a hint of garlic for a secret flavor.
