Special exhibition in collaboration with Mr. Karibu Suzuki Cute fish children are the stars of the show!

The special exhibition “Karibu Suzuki x Umigatari: Garekigenyou fisheries exhibition” will be held at the Joetsu City Aquatic Museum Umigatari in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, from March 20 (Wednesday, national holiday), focusing on fish children (juvenile fish).

Karibu Suzuki

This special exhibition is a project in collaboration with Mr. Karibu Suzuki, a shore-side juvenile fish collector who has appeared in many media and events and is the director of the “Juvenile Fish Aquarium” in Shizuoka Prefecture. Fish children (juveniles) are a precious moment in the growth process, as there are many species whose appearance differs from that of fish adults (adults). This special exhibition focuses on juvenile fish and introduces new discoveries about their charms, wonders, and cuteness. This is the first time that Umigatari has held a special exhibition on juvenile fish.

The main part of the special exhibition is a themed tank displaying juvenile fish and juvenile organisms. The tanks are divided by theme, displaying juvenile fish from the Sea of Japan and Pacific Ocean sides, respectively, as well as those that undergo significant changes in the process of becoming adults from juvenile fish. Visitors can observe them closely while listening to the explanations of the Umigatari keepers and Mr. Suzuki’s original recommendations.

According to Umigatari, the juvenile fish on display are collected from all over Japan and abroad, and will be replaced as needed during the exhibition.

Hypodytes rubripinnis

On March 20 (Wed., national holiday), the first day of the special exhibition, an opening ceremony will be held with Mr. Suzuki. On May 5 (Sun., national holiday) during Golden Week, an event will be held at a fishing port in Joetsu City where you can actually experience shore-side collecting with Mr. Suzuki.

In addition, visitors can enjoy the “Gasa Gasa Experience Booth,” where they can enjoy a simulated experience of collecting juvenile shore fishes in a ball pool, a quiz corner, and a quiz rally where visitors can get an original card by visiting the museum. The museum store will offer juvenile fish goods, and the restaurant will have a special menu featuring shirasu.

The special exhibition will run for approximately three months. Visitors will be able to enjoy the charm and wonder of juvenile fish as well as their changing appearance during that period.
