Magellanic penguin chicks were born at the Aquatic Museum Umigatari in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, and are now making energetic noises.
This chick was just born on the 9th of this month. It is being nurtured by the parent penguins in the nest hole and growing up.
The breeding season began in late March at Umigatari, and about 70 eggs have been confirmed so far. One chick was born on the 3rd of this month, and currently about 20 chicks have been born.

“We have newborns every day, so you can see everything from big ones to newborns. Depending on the nest, there are parents who will show you their young, so please ask the staff.”
Since the year following the opening of the museum, Umigatari has successfully bred for seven consecutive years.

“We are creating an environment that is easy for them to breed and raise their young. This year, we prepared a lot of rice straw as nesting material. The straw acts as a cushion and prevents the chicks from getting cold from the ground. The chicks are growing well.”
The chicks will start swimming in the pool after about two months.
Umitari is currently breeding approximately 100 Magellanic penguins.
