Exhibition of deep-sea fish \u201cHigenaga Yagiuo\u201d Joetsu Aquarium Umigatari"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>An unknown new face joins the <\/strong>display<strong>!<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>A\u00a0rare fish \u201cHigenaga Yagiuo\u201d has been discovered, whose detailed ecology has not been investigated. It has not yet been listed in any guidebooks.\u00a0 It was found off the coast of Joetsu, and has been exhibited for the first time in Japan from September 26<sup>th<\/sup>, Saturday.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ff\u7121\u984c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ff\u7121\u984c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ff\u7121\u984c.jpg 733w, https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ff\u7121\u984c-370x100.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>This is the \u201cHigenaga Yagiuo\u201d on display.\u00a0 It is about 15 cm in length. \u00a0As the name \u201c<em>Higenaga<\/em>\u00a0(long beard)\u201d suggests, something like a beard extends from the lower chin. \u00a0This is a taste-sensing organ called the taste bud. \u00a0The beard is thought to be used to search for food while moving freely.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3629\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_00f000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"798\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_00f000.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_00f000-370x208.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_00f000-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_00f000-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_00f000-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>In\u00a0January 2020, the fishermen of the Nadachi Fisheries Cooperative in Joetsu City found the \u201cHigenaga Yagiuo\u201d in their fish catch from a depth of 200m, and delivered it to Umigatari.<\/p>\r\n<p>At first, Umigatari thought that it was a &#8220;Yagiuo&#8221; which is already widely known. It lives in a shallow place at a depth of about 30m.\u00a0 However, the habitat of this new fish is different from that of the typical \u201cYagiuo\u201d, Umigatari contacted Assistant Professor Kai Yoshiaki of the Maizuru Fisheries Experiment Station of Kyoto University.\u00a0 \u00a0As a result of DNA analysis, it was confirmed that it was a different species called \u201cHigenaga Yagiuo\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_0f0001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_0f0001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Although\u00a0it seems to be a \u201cHigenaga Yagiuo\u201d of the same family as the fish <em>Hakkaku<\/em>, its detailed ecology is still unknown. \u00a0Currently, Assistant Professor Kai is writing a research thesis, and \u201cHigenaga Yagiuo\u201d has not been published in any of the guidebooks.<\/p>\r\n<p>Umigatari had kept the \u201cHigenaga Yagiuo\u201d in a backyard aquarium where the water temperature had been adjusted to 4\u2103 according to the deep sea environment, and the light had been blocked. \u00a0This is the first exhibition in Japan because the correct conditions to keep the fish have not previously been available.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Still0925_00004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3634\" the deep-sea section said, \u201cI started taking care of the fish by trying different things. \u00a0I\u2019ve been feeding small zooplankton.\u00a0 This method ensures that we can keep the fish in good condition for the maximum possible time.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>After confirming the identity of the Higenaga Yagiuo for the first time in Umigatari, we have since obtained more individuals from the Nadachi Fisheries Cooperative. \u00a0Now, four have been exhibited in the special aquarium on the second floor from Saturday, September 26th.<\/p>\r\n<p>At\u00a0Umigatari, we want to continue
