{"id":3166,"date":"2020-09-03T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-02T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/?p=3166"},"modified":"2020-09-15T16:33:40","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T07:33:40","slug":"take-a-walk-through-the-streets-of-gangi-mikuni-kaido-shiozawa-juku-minamiuonuma-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yukiguni-journey.jp\/en\/3166\/","title":{"rendered":"Take a Walk Through the Streets of Gangi!<br>Mikuni Kaido Shiozawa-juku (Minami Uonuma City)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are in the snowy country, there is a tourist spot in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, where you can see the scenery of \u201cGangi(covered walkway)\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00002-4.jpg\" alt=\"Still0827_00002\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00002-4-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Shiozawa-juku, a post town on the Mikuni Kaido, once prospered as an important transportation hub connecting Edo (Tokyo) and Echigo (Niigata).\u00a0 Shiozawa-juku was originally an old-fashioned shopping street which used the gangi walkways unique to snow country.\u00a0 In order to convey the culture of the snow country and make the best use of this cityscape, a 350-meter section of gangi walkway was re-developed, and the exterior of the storefronts were unified. \u00a0Let\u2019s have a look by walking around the town.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00019.jpg\" alt=\"Still0827_00019\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00019-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Gangi: Eaves overhanging the entrance(front) of the shops lining the street.\u00a0 This sidewalk does not get wet even on rainy or snowy days<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span title=\"\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Walking along the sidewalk, only the color of the walkway under the gangi is different. In fact, mantises have a close relation to the culture of the snow country. \u00a0If the mantis lays its eggs in a high place, the winter will have a heavy snowfall. It is said that the residents have predicted the amount of snow by looking at the position of the insect\u2019s eggs, because the snow was low if the eggs were laid in a low spot. \u00a0As you can see, the of heavy snowfall is recorded on the pillar.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00016.jpg\" alt=\"Still0827_00016\" width=\"801\" height=\"451\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00016-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>While walking along the Gangi street, we came upon the \u201cRice School\u201dat the hub of the Shiozawa-juku walking path. There you can enjoy learning about the history of rice that Uonuma is proud of, and enjoy various goods related to rice. Here you can buy the \u201cMotenashi-Tegata. \u00a0This is a map with coupons issued by the NPO \u201cMinami Uonuma Hospitality Town\u201d and comes with 6 service vouchers that can be used at shops in Shiozawa-juku. If you show this ticket at a designated store, you will receive something special. \u00a0I tried using it immediately.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00017.jpg\" alt=\"Still0827_00017\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00017-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>I used a coupon at Rice School for a \u201ctwo-handed scoop of Shiozawa Koshihikari rice from Uonuma.\u201d Koshihikari from Shiozawa is a particularly high-grade of rice within the city of Uonuma. \u00a0You can scoop up rice that costs more than 800 yen per kg once with both hands and take it back in the bag provided. \u00a0The record for most rice taken in a two-handed scoop is 700g! \u00a0This makes me want to try harder!<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00021.jpg\" alt=\"Still0827_00021\" width=\"782\" height=\"440\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00021-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>What came next was the Otsu confectionery shop, a well-established Japanese confectionery shop that has been in business for over 80 years. \u00a0There are some 20 kinds of Japanese and Western sweets in the store.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00023.jpg\" alt=\"Still0827_00023\" width=\"804\" height=\"452\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00023-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The most popular item in the store is the \u201cCheese Manju\u201d that has been made for over 30 years.\u00a0 The insides are a combination of three types of cream cheese, all wrapped in a galette dough.\u00a0 It tastes like a small cheesecake, and is very popular as a souvenir.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00024.jpg\" alt=\"Still0827_00024\" width=\"807\" height=\"454\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Still0827_00024-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Here you can also exchange your coupon for another special product, \u201cMaki no Manju.\u201d The white bean paste is wrapped in a cake blended with miso. A simple yet sweet mix of the bean jam and the saltiness of miso makes for an addictive treat.
