Known as the birthplace of skiing in Japan, the Kanayasan Ski Resort in Onuki, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, will close for the season on Thursday, March 15, due to a lack of snow.<\/p>\r\n

January 28, 2024 Kanaya-yama Ski Resort when it opens<\/p>\r\n

Kanayasan Ski Resort opened for business this season on January 28. However, the subsequent lack of snowfall and rising temperatures have caused the snow to melt, making it impossible to ensure safe skiing conditions. In order to operate, the ski area requires a snowfall of at least 70 centimeters, or 30 centimeters with pressure snow, but as of Wednesday, February 14, the ski area has only 43 centimeters of snow (10 centimeters with pressure snow).<\/p>\r\n

The lifts will be closed on Thursday, February 15, but visitors can continue to enjoy sledding and snow play.<\/p>\r\n
