A ceremony in honor of Major Lerch, who taught skiing for the first time in Japan 113 years ago, was held at the Kanayasan ski resort in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture.<\/p>\r\n<p><a class=\"swipebox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00001-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-238036\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00001-3-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Still0112_00001\" width=\"798\" height=\"449\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00001-3-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>January 12 (Friday) is designated as &#8220;Ski Day&#8221; because 113 years ago, in 1911, Major Lerch, a soldier of the then Austro-Hungarian Empire, gave the first full-scale ski instruction in Japan in Takada, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. The Lerch Society, a citizens&#8217; group in Joetsu City, and others hold a memorial service every year at the Kanayasan Ski Resort to honor Major Lerch&#8217;s achievements.<\/p>\r\n<p><a class=\"swipebox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00002-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-238037\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00002-3-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Still0112_00002\" width=\"802\" height=\"451\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00002-3-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>This year, 61 people attended, including members of the association, Joetsu City Mayor Nakagawa, officials from the ski federation, and local Takada Nishi Elementary School students.<\/p>\r\n<p><a class=\"swipebox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/618562ee720f7427050c3d6855233892.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-238042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/618562ee720f7427050c3d6855233892-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"240112_\u30b9\u30ad\u30fc\u306e\u65e5 \u30ec\u30eb\u30d2\u5c11\u4f50\u9855\u5f70\u4f1a\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/618562ee720f7427050c3d6855233892-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Skiing with a single stick<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>First, the single stick skiing technique taught by Major Lerch was introduced, and the Lerch Society actually demonstrated single stick skiing.<\/p>\r\n<p><a class=\"swipebox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00005-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-238040\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00005-3-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Still0112_00005\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00005-3-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Participants then offered flowers in front of the Lerch statue, and fourth graders from Takada Nishi Elementary School expressed their appreciation.<\/p>\r\n<p><a class=\"swipebox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00007-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-238046\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00007-2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Still0112_00007\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" data-low-src=\"https:\/\/www.joetsu.ne.jp\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Still0112_00007-2-400x225.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>We who live at the foot of Mt. Kanaya are able to enjoy skiing thanks to Major Lerch who introduced skiing to Japan.
